Bridget

Bridget was born in 1823 and was 23yo when she arrived in Adelaide.  Bridget married Joseph O'Brien  (1821-1903) on 2nd May 1847 in Adelaide with Bridget's sister Catherine and her future husband James McNamara as witnesses.

Joseph O'Brien arrived in Adelaide with his parents and one sister on 11th November 1846, less than one month after the Guerin's arrival.  The O'Brien's originated from Killarney, Co. Kerry so although the marriage so soon after arrival suggests they may have known each other previously the distance apart in Ireland suggests not.

After their marriage  Bridget and Joseph spent 5 years travelling by bullock wagon through SA and Victoria before reaching the goldfields near Castlemaine. Three of their 7 children (John, Mary Anne and Thomas) were born along the way with the 4th child (Catherine) born at Castlemaine. Joseph was a Butcher and they had a shop in the Chewton area supplying meat to the gold miners. Unfortunately they lost Thomas here, aged 3yo.They moved towards Beechworth and Joseph Jnr was born in 1858, then William in 1859 and Bridget Ellen in 1860. They lived in the Myrtleford/Mudgegonga area until 1878 with Joseph working as a butcher in Beechworth. In 1884 the moved to Yarrawonga, managing a butchers' shop and then in 1887 the family moved to Yass with Joseph and eldest son John operating a Fellmongery (wool scour and tannery).  Joseph retired in 1896 and Bridget and Joseph died just 8 days apart in 1903.  Both Bridget and Joseph are buried, along with son John and his family, in Goulburn NSW.  Interestingly,  Bridget's death Certificate give her parents as John Guerin and Bridget Ryan of Broadford, Co. Clare.
The O'Brien descendants have recorded an extensive amount of family detail and history, which can be accessed  via contact with this site.
