John was born in 1826 and was 20yo when he arrived in Adelaide. John was buying and selling land south of Adelaide and it is believed he was renting land at Bull's Creek where he met and married Bridget Conlin (born 1830 Tipperary, Ireland), of Bull's Creek on 11th May 1850 at Mt. Barker. John and Bridget bought land at Bull's Creek in 1852, just 3kms from Bridget's parents. Bridget and John had 8 children; Catherine (1851), Ellen (1852), James (1854), John (1856), Bridget (1858), Michael (1860), Lawrence (1862), Patrick (1864).
John and Bridget settled in a small hut (still standing- see "Events" 2016) and eventually built a stone house as the children arrived. They built up the farm working mainly with cattle and horses but also an orchard and garden (an original apple tree still exists). Under considerable business and family pressures John was committed to an Asylum in 1864. Except for a short-lived escape in 1874 John remained in the Asylum until his death in 1878 and it is believed he is buried in a paupers grave West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide.
Bridget took control of the Bull's Creek property in 1879 and remained there with the children until 1887. In 1887 the family all moved to the Kaniva area of western Victoria. The family owned and sold a lot of land in western Victoria and it is assumed they farmed it and kept Bridget. The 3 youngest sons, Michael, Lawrence and Patrick, relocated to farms around Salisbury, SA between 1907 and 1911 and it is believed mother Bridget moved back to live with them around this time. Bridget died at Salisbury aged 93yo on 5th July 1923 and is buried in the Salisbury Catholic Cemetery.
